About the film
Title : The Coromandel Fishers
Animation | 4 minutes
Madraspattanm was once a thriving fishing village.
In Chennai's urban transformation, residents of traditional fishing villages have been displaced to areas far from the sea. Their lands have been cleared for residential, commercial, and other urban development projects. The resettlement areas starkly contrast their rich traditions and deep connection to the sea, which once sustained their way of life.
Today, these communities face significant struggles—protesting against the loss of their homes and livelihoods while being pushed into severe economic hardship. Their displacement has not only disrupted their profession but also severed their cultural practices tied to the sea.
Synopsis
The film presents the memories of a boy from a fishing village, now displaced and far away from his home and livelihood. The title and narrative is an homage to the poem 'The Coromandel Fishers' by poet Sarojini Naidu.
